New York: D. Appleton and Co, 1874. Unstated 1st edition. 485 pages with 14 pages of advertisements in the back. Measures 7-3/4" x 5". Decorative red hardcover with gilt title on spine; With 155 named illustrations, tables and charts. This book is broken up into animal foods - nitrogenous and non-nitrogenous, vegetable foods (nitrogenous / non), liquids (coffee, tea, alcohol, spirits, etc) , and gaseous foods (atmospheric air and ventilation?), and goes into great detail of the descriptions of many types of food - those commonly known, and those which have 'lost favor' with today's standards: 'black pudding (blood)', camel flesh, horse and ass, Shell-fish and turtle, etc. Also under the 'animal foods', one chapter describes such foods 'which are of a somewhat disgusting nature, or such as are rarely used by civilised (sic) people, but it may be proper to name a few': listing iguana, lizards, frog, snakes, small monkey, bat, large white ants, locusts, grasshopper, etc. Very in depth and interesting book with much information on how medical doctors saw the nutritional value of foods for what was common in the 1870's. Book in fair condition with flaws noted: Front inner gutter starting to crack, else tight binding. Small tear on rear spine outer gutter, 2-1/4" long from head of tail. Very clean interior contents, except for previous owner's embossed initials (very interesting design), and private library stamp on front and rear endpages (William D. Richardson) which coincides with the previous owner's stamp. 2nd previous owner's name written in pencil on ffep, and title page - else no interior tears, dog-ear pages, or remainder marks. Not an ex-library book (public library). Previous sellers label on inside rear endpaper. Corners bumped and rubbed. Head and tail of spine chipped and rubbed.
