The novel was serialized in four parts by Scribner's Magazine within January - April, 1934 and later published in book form in April of that year. His fourth and final completed novel, Tender was Fitzgerald's darkest, and most auto-biographical - paralleling his life with Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald. Illustrations by Edward Shenton. Serialized magazine publications - such as this one - are generally thought of as 'true first editions' because they are printed and released before the final first book edition is available. Overall, binding in fine condition - professionally rebound in November, 2013, utilizing the finest materials by skilled practitioners. Interior contents (magazine) is in good condition with no underlining, writing or damaged pages. New York The Independent 1901 1st Edition No Binding Very Good Newspaper 4to - over 9 - 12

(Bibliographic reference: Crane C2) This single month wraps of The INDEPENDENT is very scarce and notable for containing Robert Frost's very early third appearance in print in a national magazine, predating his first book. 'The Quest of the Orchis' was included in the June 27, 1901 issue, published as R. L. Frost, and is only his third appearance, after his 1894 inclusion of the poem 'My Butterfly: An Elegy' and a 1896 poem 'The Birds Do Thus' in the same magazine. Elizabeth Shepley Sergeant's description in Robert Frost: The Trial by Existence explains it in detail: '...Frost has often said, was one of the two most crucial experiences of a literary and poetic kind in his student life: "I happened into the old library, and found on the magazine rack a copy of the Independent, with a poem on the front page. This experience gave me my very first revelation that a publication existed, anywhere in my native land, that was a vehicle for the publication of poetry. There was even an editorial about this poem, which I read with rapt amaze. So when later I had a poem [My Butterfly], I of course sent it to the Independent.'" Overall, very good condition, with flaws noted: Light chipping at head of spine and top edge of cover. Top/fore corner rounded from mechanical damage (see picture). Creased lower front spine near lower staple location. Staples appear lightly oxidized. Otherwise internally clean and tight two-staple binding. 123 Hemingway, Ernest Poetry: A Magazine of Verse, Volume 21, October 1922 - March 1923 [Ernest Hemingway Early Poetry]
Chicago Poetry Magazine 1923 Hardcover Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9
Chicago: Poetry, A Magazine of Verse. Published October 1922-March 1923. Volume 21, issues #1-6. Olive green cloth binding hardcover, measures 7-1/4" x 5-1/2". 348 pp. with 22 pages of ads bound in rear. Front and back covers (wrappers) of bound magazines are removed, but March 1923 bound in back of book. Overall 6-month contents page included. Contains six very early Hemingway poems, found within the collection titled "Wanderings" - "Mitrailliatrice", "Oily Weather", "Roosevelt", "Riparto D'Assalto", "Champs d'Honneur", and "Chapter Heading" (Hanneman #C 121). This is an extremely early (and rare) magazine appearance by Hemingway. These six poems make up six of the ten poems featured in his first published work, THREE STORIES & TEN POEMS. This collection of poems was published six months BEFORE the first and only limited edition publishing of TSTP in Paris by Contact Publishing - 300 copies of TSTP was published in July, 1923. A biographical note, on page 231 of Poetry Magazine, states "Ernest M. Hemingway, a young Chicago poet now abroad, who will soon issue his first book of verse." The acknowledgment found on p. [xi] of TSTP states: "Five of these poems were first printed in Poetry A Magazine of Verse." This is incorrect. Six of the poems were printed. In this offered bound magazine, "Mitraigiatrice" (July printing of TSTP) was spelled "Mitrailliatrice" (January printing, Poetry Magazine). This particular copy is an interesting ex-library copy, from the University of Chicago - just under 18 miles from Hem's boyhood home in Oak Park, IL, or 10 miles from where he lived just after marrying Hadley (1st wife). Hem moved away just 13 months before this volume was published and resided in the Univ of Chicago library. Cloth binding in good condition with minimum wear visible. Ex-library copy from University of Chicago, with typical library label, withdrawn stamps, removed rear card sleeve and info on title and copyright pages. Spine darkened with age but still readable; extreme cover margins, fore and bottom page block edges, and extreme page margins are also darkened. Removed labels to outer lower spine, and rear panel - both removed but have 'shadow' outlines. Slight rubbing to corners and head & tail of spine. Pages are unmarked and clean. Pages 221-233 are loose from text block, but attached. Page 231 detached and laid in.
