New York Harper's Monthly Magazine 1878 1st Edition No Binding Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9
1878 The Turkish Wars with the Hospitalers Author: De Forest, J. W. Title: The Turkish Wars with the Hospitalers Publisher: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1878. Notes: A 11 page article on the history of the Hospitalers - a Western Christian military order - arose as a group of individuals associated with an Amalfitan hospital in the Muristan district of Jerusalem, which was dedicated to St John the Baptist and was founded around 1023 by Blessed Gerard to provide care for poor, sick or injured pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the Western Christian conquest of Jerusalem in 1099 during the First Crusade, the organization became a religious and military order under its own charter, and it was charged with the care and defense of the Holy Land. Following the conquest of the Holy Land by Islamic forces, the order operated from Rhodes, over which it was sovereign, and later from Malta where it administered a vassal state under the Spanish viceroy of Sicily. This particular article describes this history, up to the 1565 Siege of Malta (their current position). Condition: Complete article removed from within original Harper's Monthly Magazine. Original wrapers-bound removed and missing. Now enclosed in a archival crystal-clear magazine slip.

National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans, Duyckinck, Evert A.
78 Duyckinck, Evert A. National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans
New York Johnson, Fry & Co. 1862 1st Edition Hardcover Good Book 4to - over 9 - 12 Chappel, Alonzo
New York: Johnson, Fry & Company, 1862; two volumes, 616 pages & 598 pages respectively, quarter leather with marbled boards, five raised spine bands as well as gilt spine lettering, 4to (9" x 11"). All edges marbled. Two Volume Quarto Set of National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans: Including (152 Illustrations of) Orators, Statesmen, Naval and Military Heroes, Jurists, Authors, Etc., Etc., from Original Full Length Paintings by Alonzo Chappel with Biographical and Historical Narratives, by Evert A. Duyckinck. The set presented here is in about good condition, with conditions noted: some noticeable wear to the leather on both volumes, especially on raised bands and bumped corners, and mild rubbing to the boards of each as well. Volume one's spine is torn between the first and third band, 3/4 the way through, from back to front, and near the fifth band, 1/2 way through. Chipped and frayed leather on spine's head and tail. Front covers detached on both volumes, but present. (Reattaching would be simple, as the joints (where the cover meets the spine) still have a tight fit.) The binding is tight on each volume, with minimal off-setting of the engravings, confined mostly to the protective tissue adjacent to each illustration. Maybe 40% of illustrations have protective tissue - other 60% are missing their tissue. Illustrated frontispiece of Washington and endpaper (Vol 1) torn through top 1/4 and parts missing. Also corner damp staining to first 20 pages of volume one. Overall, the text shows scattered foxing in small areas, but is overall very clean. This set of National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans is a real feast for both the mind and the eye for any fan and/or collector of American history.
