Liberty Bell engraving print, Sander, David [Sander Wood Engraving Co.]
244 Sander, David [Sander Wood Engraving Co.] Liberty Bell engraving print
Porter, In. Roast Pigeon Press 1975 No Binding Very Good Print 8vo - over 7 - 9
Original image was selected by the David Sander, of the Sander Wood Engraving Published by the Roast Pigeon Press, Porter Indiana. Copyright 1975. The original image is not sourced, but any copyrights held by individual writings or images have been long expired. The original illustration may have come from Harper's Monthly Magazine, July 1851, from the story "Our National Anniversary" by Benson Lossing. Image in very good condition with flaws noted: crisp and clean, with a bright contrasting black and white image. The paper is high quality, showing no yellowing or foxing. An excerp from that story: "Tradition says that it was first broken by Dr. Franklin, who remarked, 'Gentlemen, we must now all hang together, or we shall surely hang separately.' Thousands of anxious citizens had gathered in the streets of Philadelphia, for it was known that the final vote would be taken on that day. From the hour when Congress convened in the morning, the old bell-man had been in the steeple. He had placed a boy at the door below, to give him notice when the announcement should be made. As hour succeeded hour, the graybeard shook his head, and said, 'They will never do it! they will never do it!' Suddenly a loud shout came up from below, and there stood the little blue-eyed boy clapping his hands, and shouting, 'Ring! Ring!' Grasping the iron tongue of the old bell, backward and forward he hurled it a hundred times, its loud voice proclaiming 'Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof.' The excited multitude in the streets responded with loud acclamations, and with cannon peals, bonfires, and illuminations, the patriots held a glorious carnival that night in the quiet city of Penn."

Kuppenheimer engraved prints, Sander, Jacob [Sander Wood Engraving Co.]
246 Sander, Jacob [Sander Wood Engraving Co.] Kuppenheimer engraved prints
Chicago Sander Wood Engraving Co. 1975 No Binding Very Good Print Folio - over 12 - 15 Leyendecker, J. C.
These three original prints were engraved by Jacob Sander in the mid-1920's, based on the then popular Kuppenheimer ad campaign by J.C. Leyendecker. Sander based the wood engravings on current ads made by Leyendecker. He engraved around forty fashion subjects for newspaper advertising by the Sander Engraving Company of Chicago, Ill. No signature or date is present, and they are not a limited edition set (although the Sander Engraving Co. is gone, and original blocks most likely sold off or destroyed, therefore no others may be produced). These are prints from the original blocks, but most likely "struck" (or printed) in the mid-1970s. As they are not titled prints, so I will title them by description. MEASUREMENTS: "Kuppenheimer w/ seated man on right" - 7-3/4" x 6-1/4" image, 13" x 9" overall size. "Kuppenheimer w/ trophy" - 7-1/4" x 6-1/4" image, 13" x 9" overall size. "Untitled baseball throw" - 6-1/4" x 6" image, 13" x 9" overall size. CONDITION: All images in fair to good condition, with no flaws, creases, etc. I am not a paper expert, so I don't know what type they are printed on; seems to be a higher quality paper, almost vellum like in appearance. Not previously framed, no tape marks or hinges present.

A Sentimental Journey through France & Italy [numbered, limited edition], Sterne, Laurence
259 Sterne, Laurence A Sentimental Journey through France & Italy [numbered, limited edition]
New York Alfred A. Knopf 1925 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9 Wilfred Jones
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1925. #628/2000 numbered by Pynson Printers of New York - Typography by Elmer Adler. Hardcover - measures just 6" x 9-1/2" tall. Ochre cloth spine with illustrated pattern paper boards. 140 pp. With 12 beautiful wood engraving illustrations printed in a brownish-sepia ink by Wilfred Jones. Spine slightly worn, gilt title still readable. Bottom corner has slight staining. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Binding tight and complete. No writing, tears, foxing, etc. Previous owner's gift inscription on front endpaper. The novel was extremely popular and influential and helped establish travel writing as the dominant genre of the second half of the 18th century. Unlike prior travel accounts which stressed classical learning and objective non-personal points of view, A Sentimental Journey emphasized the subjective discussions of personal taste and sentiments, of manners and morals over classical learning. Throughout the 1770's women travel writers began publishing significant numbers of sentimental travel accounts. Sentiment also became a favorite style among those expressing non-mainstream views including political radicalism. The narrator is the Reverend Mr. Yorick, who is slyly represented to guileless readers as Sterne's barely disguised alter ego. The book recounts his various adventures, usually of the amorous type, in a series of self-contained episodes. The book is less eccentric and more elegant in style than Tristram Shandy and was better received by contemporary critics. It was published on February 27, and on March 18 Sterne died.
