'CHIEF' Original lithograph by Leonard Baskin, SIGNED / NUMBERED PRINT - #39/100 Available is a rare original signed and numbered limited edition lithograph by internationally acclaimed sculptor and printmaker LEONARD BASKIN (American, 1922 - 2000). This engraving entitled 'Chief' dates from 1978, and predates his later series of Native American style subjects. It is signed in pencil by the artist on the front lower right "Baskin" and numbered on the lower left "39/100". The print is from a limited edition of only 100 impressions. It is in very good and bright condition, with a few faint creases along the perimeter of the image. See pictures for overall condition. Print measures 14" x 22-1/2" (sheet), 7-1/4" x 10-3/4" (image). CATALOG REFERENCE: This print is a non-cataloged piece from Baskin. Not listed in Alan Fern and Judith O'Sullivan's "The Complete Prints of Leonard Baskin, A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1983". A well known draftsman, printmaker and sculptor, Leonard Baskin had the ability to depict in an abstract style man and his relation to the world. Whether working with bronze or wood or two-dimensional mediums, his focus remained on large heroic, but flawed human beings who at times recall photographic images of concentration-camp victims or birds with human bodies that suggest mythological forms. His works are part of the permanent collections at many of the world's leading galleries and museums, including the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institution, Hirshhorn Sculpture Gardens, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, British Museum and Vatican Museum.

This original poem was read on the steps of Independence Hall, Philadelphia on July 4th, 1876 as the crowning success of the memorable exercises of that eventful day. Overall, good condition, with flaws noted: Board corners bumped and rubbed - especially bottom corners. Head and tail of spine rubbed. Outer spine split from rear gutter, 4-1/4" down (closed tear), could be easily mended with archival book glue. Front and rear board covers show the wear and staining of age. Rear top back cover show slight moisture stain and a discoloration spot, about 3/4" square size. Thumb prints and some foxing present internally. No interior writing present. Not ex-library.

Example: "Jackman, Moses M. contractor, h. Chestnut, near Elm" The front section claims 4,000+ names with more than 1,000 changes from the 1854 volume (two years previous). The wealth of knowledge contained in this condensed book is amazing - especially for genealogy resources. Full title: [The ROXBURY DIRECTORY, Containing THE CITY RECORD, NAMES OF THE CITIZENS, A BUSINESS DIRECTORY, and A MAP OF THE CITY; With an Almanac for 1856] A very rare and important city directory containing listings for numerous prominent Boston (Roxbury) families, including Fitzgerald's, Adams, etc. A wonderful genealogy resource for the Boston area. Corners slightly bumped and rubbed. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. Outer boards show small signs of insect damage ot back cover (three small areas) and a slight discoloration of the lower rear panel. Condition of map: foldout map is in very good condition, with no tears. Spine contains white adhesive remainder from previous owner's tape label for organizing his previous collection. Interior pages have some spots of foxing present. Background Information: Roxbury is a neighborhood within Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It was one of the first towns founded in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630, and became a city in 1846 until annexed to Boston on January 5, 1868. The original town of Roxbury once included the current Boston neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury, the South End and much of Back Bay. Roxbury now generally ends at Columbus Avenue to the north and Lenox Street to the east. Listed in the City Directory: Henry H. Richardson, architect; Rev. John W. Olmstead, editor of Watchman; including 4,000+ more listings.
