Images taken from: Harper's Monthly Magazine: January - December, 1860; January - December, 1861; January - December, 1862; January - December, 1863; January - June, August - November, 1864. Godey's Lady's Book: December, 1864; January-March, May -August, October, 1865. They were compiled by a lifelong collector of woodblock illustrations, who later compiled and professionally published them in this booklet.

Chicago: Ken, Inc. Published May 5th, 1938. Magazine titled, "A Cargo of Innocence". Measures 13-1/2" tall x 10-5/8" wide. 106 pp. with lots of articles, ads, illustrations and photos. Contains the Hemingway article, "The Cardinal Picks a Winner" (Hanneman #C 293). This is the first and only appearance of this article. Numerous full page pictures of Spanish Civil War images, including other topics highlighted by Ken (anti-nazi, anti-fascist, etc). Magazine in good condition with flaws noted: A faint crease across the front center length of the cover, which shows up as a white line on the front color cover; bottom and top corners have faint creases; small white thumb creases dot the cover. Else, spine staples tight and magazine is clean with no interior writing. Pages 53 - 56 (one fold) detached from staple bindings - (the center of magazine), and laid in. Full-page picture pages 51-57 have up to a 1/2" tear on the outer center edge, extending inward.

Illustrated with 6 named illustrations. 258 pp. with 9 pages of literature advertisements in the back. A collection of humorous vignettes about traveling in the United States by rail, coach, wagon, steamboat, canal barge, including others. Benjamin Franklin Taylor (1819-1887) won renown as a war correspondent for Chicago newspapers during the Civil War. In peacetime he became a freelance writer best known as a poet and travel writer. This book in good condition with flaws noted: Binding tight. Front and back covers showing slight wear and bumped / rubbed corners. Small spot of red paint on cover. Head and tail of spine chipped. Some interior writing in pencil, mostly previous bookseller's notes, but some horizontal lines within margins.
