Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1866. 710 pgs, with no bound advertisements in the back. Bound in Quarter black leather with black cloth boards, four raised spine bands as well as gilt spine lettering, Octavo size: (8-3/4" tall x 6-1/2"). Marbled endpapers. Presumably been rebound by "Carlon & Hollenbeck, Printers & Binders, Indianapolis" as the small (5/8" x 1-1/4") label on the rear inside board explains. Classic story with one hundred illustrations by Arthur Boyd Houghton, and engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. Book in fair condition with flaws noted: Some noticeable wear to black leather on outer hinge (both front and back); a 1-1/4" tear to the spine on front lower hinge. More wear to spine head and tail. Inner hinges are tight, but four binding threads can be seen (not a cracked hinge, looks like it was intended to be this way). Interior contents are tight, except for pages 210 - 222, which are slightly loose and protrude thru the uniform fore edge by 1/16". The illustrations do not, nor did they have tissue paper. Internally, no foxing of pages present. Outer edges of first few pages (including title page) and last 50 or so pages have moisture discoloration around the top, fore, and bottom edges (see pictures). Individual pages are flexible, but as a group of pages, feel somewhat rigid-like (which adds to the "tightness" feeling of the binding). Otherwise, a very clean, solid, and tight copy.
