Boston: William F. Gill & Co, 1877. Later printing from the 1876 edition. Light blue Victorian gilt decorated cloth hardcover, with gilt title on front board, and illustrative gilt title decorations on spine, with no dust jacket. Measures 6-1/4" x 8-7/8" tall. 74 pp. Numerous illustrations (78 named illustrations throughout text). All edges gilt. A patriotic book to celebrate 100th anniversary of the birth of American Independence and the United States of America, with the 'National Ode - The Memorial Freedom Poem'. This original poem was read on the steps of Independence Hall, Philadelphia on July 4th, 1876 as the crowning success of the memorable exercises of that eventful day. Overall, good condition, with flaws noted: Board corners bumped and rubbed - especially bottom corners. Head and tail of spine rubbed. Outer spine split from rear gutter, 4-1/4" down (closed tear), could be easily mended with archival book glue. Front and rear board covers show the wear and staining of age. Rear top back cover show slight moisture stain and a discoloration spot, about 3/4" square size. Thumb prints and some foxing present internally. No interior writing present. Not ex-library.
