1 Rees, Thomas Egypt and the Holy Land Today
Springfield, Il. State Register Company 1922 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Book Signed by Author(s)
Springfield, Illinois: State Register Company. 1st edition, printing 1922. Dark green cloth hardcover, in no DJ. Measures 8" tall x 5-1/2" wide. 404 pp. with one page of advertisements in the back. Signed in pen on the half-title page: "With Cordial Regards of the Author, Thomas Rees". A signed, 1st edition / 1st printing copy of this book - SIGNED BOLDLY IN THE BOOK! Not on a bookplate or sticker. Contains sixteen full page black & white pictures of classical locations in Egypt and the Holy Land. One will remember on November 4, 1922 Howard Carter discovered the undisturbed tomb of Tutankhamun's (subsequently designated KV62), by far the best preserved and most intact pharaonic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings. This book was published prior to that wonderful find, and therefore does not cover that discovery, but more general topics: Chapter 1: Voyaging Eastward; Chapter 2: On the Mediterranean; Chapter 3: The Aligerian Pirates; Chapter 4: The Riviera to Egypt; Chapter 5: At Alexandria; Chapter 6: On the Nile; Chapter 7: Land of the Pharaohs; Chapter 8: Fighting Gamines; Chapter 9: Temples and Tombs; Chapter 10: Wonders of Egypt; Chapter 11: The Shifting Sands; Chapter 12: A City of Contrasts; Chapter 13: Shopping in Cairo; Chapter 14: Social Life in Egypt; Chapter 15: Grand Opera; Chapter 16: Sports and Pastimes; Chapter 17: Modern Structures; Chapter 18: The Past and Present; Chapter 19: The Way to Jerusalem; Chapter 20: The Jaffa Gate; Chapter 21: The Holy City; Chapter 22: Dolorosa; Chapter 23: Round About Jerusalem; Chapter 24: Bethlehem of Judea; Chapter 25: The Mount of Olives; Chapter 26: The Road to Jericho; Chapter 27: On Jordan's Banks; Chapter 28: And Now Through Italy; Chapter 29: A Night in a "Vaghen Leetz"; Chapter 30: Old Nuremberg; Chapter 31: Carillons and Chimes; Chapter 32: Four Famous Carillons; Chapter 33: The Art of Bell Music; Chapter 34: A Queen's Holiday; Chapter 35: In Paris Again; Chapter 36: Battlefields of France; Chapter 37: Home Again. Note: It has come to my attention of one other seller has a signed copy available on the web that states the book is an 'Author's Written Autograph Edition' with that note on the half-title page, where the signature is located. This edition of the book - the first edition / first printing, does not mention the 'Author's Written Autograph Edition' note anywhere in the book. Book is in very good condition with flaws noted: Corners bumped and rubbed. Gilt title on cover bright, gilt title on spine worn but still readable. Previous owner's name written in script pen on ffep. Front gutter starting on second blank page, one page before half-title (and signature page). Contents clean and bright, with no other writing or marks.
