Tarzan of the Apes, Burroughs, Edgar Rice
6 Burroughs, Edgar Rice Tarzan of the Apes
New York A. L. Burt Company 1914 1st Edition Hardcover Good Book 12mo - over 6 - 7
New York: A.L. Burt Company. Early reprint edition, undated [1914]. Olive green cloth hardcover in no dustjacket, measures 7-9/16" x 5-1/8". 401 pp. w/ 6 pp. of 'Popular Copyright Novels' by AL Burt. Begins with Abner, Daniel by Will N. Harben and ends with Net, The by Rex Beach. No indication of missing pages (O-Z titles) as last page is securely bound to the back free end paper. Title in black on front cover and spine, bold and very visible. Illustrated with the iconic black and white frontispiece image. An early reprint of Burroughs' first and most well-known story 'Tarzan of the Apes', which began a series that produced 25+ more novels. Originally published by A.C. McClurg in June, 1914, early reprint editions by AL Burt and Grosset & Dunlap quickly followed. Almost always undated, these reprints may be identified by advertisements in the back; this edition being a very early one - others have last pages in the T's, indicating later Tarzan novels. Book in good condition with flaws noted: Covers show rubbing and wear at top and bottom board edges; corners bumped and rubbed. Spine head and tail chipped and rubbed. Spine a bit more soiled than covers (appears darker). Binding tight, but just the most faint appearance of front binding starting after first title page. Contents clean with no interior writing, however a few dog-eared page creases present sporadicly throughout book. Worm damage present to top edge, extends into page at most 1/4", being roughly 1/16" wide, between pages 15-35. Slightest indication of dampstaining present on ffep, title page and frontispiece - which extends from the bottom edge up a maximum 1/2". Bibliography cited: Day, Bradford. Edgar Rice Burroughs - A Bibliography. New York: Science-Fiction & Fantasy Publications, 1962.

Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha, Cervantes, Miguel de Saavedra [translated by Jarvis, Charles]
10 Cervantes, Miguel de Saavedra [translated by Jarvis, Charles] Adventures of Don Quixote de la Mancha
Boston Roberts Brothers 1866 1st Edition Hardcover Fair Book 8vo - over 7 - 9 Houghton, A. B.
Boston: Roberts Brothers, 1866. 710 pgs, with no bound advertisements in the back. Bound in Quarter black leather with black cloth boards, four raised spine bands as well as gilt spine lettering, Octavo size: (8-3/4" tall x 6-1/2"). Marbled endpapers. Presumably been rebound by "Carlon & Hollenbeck, Printers & Binders, Indianapolis" as the small (5/8" x 1-1/4") label on the rear inside board explains. Classic story with one hundred illustrations by Arthur Boyd Houghton, and engraved by the Brothers Dalziel. Book in fair condition with flaws noted: Some noticeable wear to black leather on outer hinge (both front and back); a 1-1/4" tear to the spine on front lower hinge. More wear to spine head and tail. Inner hinges are tight, but four binding threads can be seen (not a cracked hinge, looks like it was intended to be this way). Interior contents are tight, except for pages 210 - 222, which are slightly loose and protrude thru the uniform fore edge by 1/16". The illustrations do not, nor did they have tissue paper. Internally, no foxing of pages present. Outer edges of first few pages (including title page) and last 50 or so pages have moisture discoloration around the top, fore, and bottom edges (see pictures). Individual pages are flexible, but as a group of pages, feel somewhat rigid-like (which adds to the "tightness" feeling of the binding). Otherwise, a very clean, solid, and tight copy.
