A photocopy of the original article: "The Change of Base", 17 pages with 11 illustrations and maps - all with enlarged and clear text. This article comes from the original Harper's Monthly Magazine publication - carefully removed, cleaned, enlarged and photocopied to fit 8-1/2" x 11" sheets of paper. They were compiled by a lifelong collector of woodblock illustrations, who later compiled and professionally published them in this booklet. This is an original publication from Yesterday in Pictures, Inc. dating from 1990. This booklet measures 8-1/2" x 11". This publication is no longer in print, as only one edition was ever made.

1878 THE HOT SPRINGS OF ARKANSAS Author: CLEEF, A. Van Title: The Hot Springs of Arkansas. Publisher: New York: Harper & Brothers, 1878. Notes: An 18 page enlightening and comprehensive account on the history of early Hot Springs, Arkansas. This narrative deals with the contemporary developmental stages of the now famous tourist location, published the Hot Springs Mountain Reservation of Arkansas, 33 years before the National Park was established. The author presents detail on the water's chemical make-up and its healing properties over skin and blood conditions and rheumatism; on early settlements; and on specific landmarks including the Garland county jail, Grand Central Hotel, Big Iron boat-house and the observatory. With yet more fascinating detail on the surrounding country, shanty villages, game hunting, the abundance of quartz and crystal, and on ancient Indian arrowheads found. Federal protection of the thermal waters was granted in 1832, giving Hot Springs the honor of being the first unofficial "National Park" with such government protection. John Howard Lawson was the co-founder and first President of the Screen Writers Guild. However, he was one of the 'Hollywood Ten' who fell foul of the House of Un-American Activities Committee by claiming the 1st Amendment and refusing to answer questions. Lawson was found guilty of contempt by Congress and sentenced to 12 months in Ashland Prison and fined $1,000. He was blacklisted by the Hollywood studios and moved to Mexico to continue writing and film-making.
